Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must meet the following eligibility requirements:

* If you are an out-of-state credentialed teacher, please carefully review your state reciprocity requirements as set forth by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing to ensure that you meet all eligibility requirements. All Oakland teachers must also meet the NCLB definition of highly qualified.

You must possess a Bachelor's degree.

Candidates who hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university or who are currently completing their bachelor's degree coursework in education and expect to have the degree and their California out-of-state teaching credential awarded no later than July, 2009, are eligible to apply.

Please note: Graduates of foreign universities must have their transcripts evaluated by an approved agency.  When requesting an evaluation, be sure that the agency specifically states that you have received the U.S. equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in your subject area AND provides a full listing of your coursework.  Applications that include foreign transcripts will not be reviewed until the completed evaluation has been turned into the OCTC program office. You cannot be a current OUSD teacher.

Current teachers in the Oakland Unified School District – excluding substitutes – are not eligible for Oakland City Teacher Corps. Substitute teaching experience will not affect a candidate's eligibility.  Oakland City Teacher Corps is designed specifically to recruit new credentialed teachers for OUSD; current credentialed OUSD teachers already receive the same benefits offered by a placement via Oakland City Teacher Corps and are not considered valid program candidates.

Individuals who will not receive a California Teaching Credential by July, 2009, may be eligible to apply for the Oakland Teaching Fellows program.  This is an alternate route program for certification and teaching in OUSD.  For more information about Oakland Teaching Fellows, click here.
