What is Oakland City Teacher Corps (OCTC)?

A quality teacher is the single most important school-based factor impacting student achievement.*

Oakland City Teacher Corps (OCTC) was created as a response to the expressed need from Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) for excellent, credentialed teachers.  Few districts have committed to creating a program which attracts, supports, and prioritizes the hiring of excellent, credentialed teachers through a selective process and cohort approach.  We want credentialed educators to teach in Oakland’s highest need public schools and to ensure that all of our students have an outstanding teacher who is committed to raising student achievement.  OCTC also offers a unique job guarantee to all candidates who are invited to join the program.

“I wanted to make a difference in the lives of students who are truly in need of having a difference made in their life.”

OCTC offers a convenient, streamlined   application process. Our program allows qualified teachers to submit one online application to be considered by principals for vacancies at many different schools within OUSD. Once an application is submitted, it is quickly reviewed, and candidates are notified of their interview status within two weeks.

OCTC was specifically designed to help outstanding credentialed teachers apply quickly to OUSD and gain early access to principals, ensuring that the schools needing them the most are fully staffed.  Once admitted into the program, candidates will work with OCTC program staff to make connections with principals and school hiring representatives.

We are currently hiring for nearly all subject areas.

Benefits of OCTC include a specialized one-week summer training focused on becoming a successful teacher within Oakland, a quick, streamlined and personalized application process, aid in completing District paperwork and processing, and the opportunity to use your talents and skills to make a greater difference with the students who have the greatest need.  Corps Teachers also join a powerful network of like-minded individuals committed raising student achievement in the District’s highest need schools.

Oakland City Teacher Corps is designed to bring effective teachers to the schools where they can have the most significant impact. Therefore, Oakland City Teacher Corps is specifically focused on educators who are inspired to teach in Oakland’s highest-need schools where students will benefit from highly effective teachers.  We welcome educators who hold a valid California Teaching Credential, and those who are eligible for state reciprocity.
