Teaching Positions in Oakland

Why Join?

“I feel lucky to work in Oakland. The school I work at gives me hope for public education. I've taught for six years in public schools in California and New York and not too long ago I felt as though my time teaching in K-12 public schools may be up.  Now, I feel I may stay in public education. I truly feel like I am making positive change in my students' lives.”

Fast Track Application Process

Oakland Unified School District is committed to getting the best teachers into the highest-need schools. This is a crucial time in the history of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). As OUSD continues to strive for “higher standards of learning and higher standards of service”. Innovative school models are being developed to shape a new generation of schools and leaders in Oakland. The skills, background, and innovation of driven, outstanding additional credentialed teachers are needed.  Given the strong need for excellent new teachers in Oakland schools, Oakland City Teacher Corps offers a job guarantee to all teachers invited to join the program.

We understand that credentialed teachers are in high demand and that often times district application and processing timelines can be lengthy. In response to those concerns, OCTC quickly reviews applications and actively connects Corps Teachers to principals to interview for positions.

Make a Bigger Difference

1 out of 3 high school students in California with not graduate.

Studies show student achievement is more heavily influenced by teacher quality than by students’ race, class, prior academic record, or school a student attends. This effect is particularly strong among students from low-income families and African American students. However, poor and minority students are the least likely group to be taught by teachers with experience, knowledge, and credentials.*

You can make a difference. Apply now.

The OUSD mission is to “provide an educational learning community that focuses exclusively on student achievement in every aspect of daily activities.” To fulfill this mission, classes need highly-qualified teachers who hold their students to the highest of standards and work resolutely to see them achieve. Although great strides have been made in the quality of education in Oakland, dedicated, credentialed teachers are still needed to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to succeed. The number of Oakland 9th graders who scored proficient or above on the California Standardized Test (CST) in language arts is just 27%; in general mathematics, just 11%**.  We are calling on the brightest and most driven certified teachers out there to join this movement – and to help change these statistics.

Become part of this pivotal moment in the Oakland Unified School District and apply to join a network of dedicated, like-minded educators as a part of OCTC.

Who We Want

We want credentialed teachers – as well as people with two, five, ten, or even more years of teaching experience looking to challenge themselves as educators in a rigorous, high-expectations setting. Candidates must hold a Clear or Preliminary Credential. Out-of-state candidates generally must hold a teaching license or teaching certificate in the subject area in which they wish to teach.

We want people who want to do something that matters for some of the most under-served students of Oakland.

There is no one profile for an ideal Oakland City Teacher Corps candidate. Although all Corps teachers hold a current teaching credential, we expect our candidates to span a variety of backgrounds and experiences and to bring to the program a diverse set of talents and skills. Our strongest candidates are those who are committed to having a positive effect on student achievement, who display excellence in their past teaching experiences, and who are dedicated to reaching and influencing students – especially those in under-resourced areas – on a daily basis.

We want credentialed teaching candidates who can teach at the elementary, middle, and high school levels. We need teachers for all subject areas – English, Spanish, physical education, and elementary education – and especially those candidates who can teach in one of our ‘high-need’ areas, including math, science, and special education.

In short, we want you to join us in this incredible opportunity.
